Tuwharetoa Māori Trust Board & Taupo District Council Joint Management Agreement

The first time in New Zealand a local authority has agreed to delegate part of its functions relating to decisions on resource consents to another party. The agreement requires all notified resource consent applications and private plan changes on Ngati Tuwharetoa land (over 65% of the district) to be heard and decided upon by a joint panel with equal representation from Taupo District Council and Ngati Tuwharetoa. Significantly, a process has been specified which allows the scope of the agreement to be potentially expanded to incorporate further district council functions as trust and understanding grows between both parties.
